The Privacy Dad (npub1xh3…luv2) Nice article about #Nextcloud. It's really the Open source killer app that could allow most daily computer use to get freed up from big corporations. Replacing the most used Google apps and Microsoft Office online ones. I have been running since it forked from OwnCloud or shortly after, first manually installed on a Synology NAS. In the beggining it was very challenging, one of, if not the most challenging self-hosted app I had used. The pace of major version update (about twice per year) is fast and I was often left behind with an old version not supported. Manual updates was a nightmare and I end up writting my own tutorial for the next update to come.
Now with my NAS turning 10 (these kids grow up fast), I decided to take it seriously to the next level. Now running Nextcloud on a TrueNAS self build machine with SSD on RAID and automated backup to my old NAS (soon to be) set externally. It's day and night how fast it runs now, I can clearly use Nextcloud at full potential and it feels as responsive as big tech products.
Bonus, now it's running in Kubernetes (like Docker for short) so it's super easy to update, one click never failed so far but it's been less than a year, I need to test it with time.
Good luck with your self-hosted journey.
