In the 90s, when I heard the story that R.E.M.’s song “What’s the Frequency, Kenneth” was based on a mugging of Dan Rather, I assumed it was an urban legend.
Nope. It was real. The mugger later did time in prison for killing an NBC stagehand to gain access to the building. He was convinced the TV networks were broadcasting signals into his brain, and he wanted to know the frequency so he could try to block it.
