I think they're benevolent but due to cause and effect have to be hands-off. Still, I don't believe in trying to convince an atheist to believe in a deity— due to my own beliefs, I don't believe either I or the deity make a strong argument for themself; and also, it's not really valuable to try to convince others to believe what I do. If the deity wanted you to have faith that they were there, there would be no Problem of Evil to speak of :P
