Northern China also captivates me because, I notice that there is a bit of disregard for it in the West.
Most of the Chinese diaspora in America is Southern Chinese. Usually descended from immigrants from Guangdong.
So most of the Chinese culture I was exposed to growing up, was Southern Chinese.
Combined with that, there is this stereotype that Northern Chinese culture has been "corrupted" by Manchu and Mongolian influence. A common thing I often hear people say is "Mandarin and Jin are "less pure" than Cantonese or Hokkien and is basically Manchu" (which btw, is pseudo-linguistics. Mandarin arose in the late Song Dynasty and no Chinese variety is more or less "pure" than the other).
But me? I find all these North Asian influences to be fascinating.
