Worried about threads, or any other instances you find unsavory? Don't be! Just remember that you have options.
On any post that's not from someone local, click on the three dots. Obvious options are that you can mute them, & you can block them.
That's fine for that one person, but if you are convinced that their instance is a hive of scum and villainy (a lot of times you can tell by looking at that instances local posts, or by the fact that big instances have defederated from them), there's another option in there.
"Block domain". That'll block *everyone* on that instance. It's easy. I've done it a few times in the past.
When I say to check a big instance, just for example, if you go to mastadon.social's about page:

Hit "Moderated Servers" at the bottom. Not every instance shows this, but this tells you who they've defederated from and why. (Of course, sometimes the name says, say, "loli" or "kiwifarms" in it, & you don't even have to check...)
