Astrud Gilberto was an accidental star who achieved instant fame with her first professional recording, The Girl From Ipanema. She only sang on it because Joao Gilberto and Stan Getz wanted someone to sing the song in English to help it break into the US market. She was the only person present who spoke English and could sing. Both Joao Gilberto and Stan Getz went on to treate her appallingly. Her beautiful vocal performances have ensured her fame has rightly eclipsed them both. An icon. RIP.
