Mars is cold and dry today, but the evidence is growing that it was once warmer and wetter. A new paper suggests that even without significant warming, water could still have flowed on Mars 3.6 billion years ago, when the temperatures got so low that carbon dioxide sublimated out of the atmosphere and formed a thick layer, protecting rivers of liquid water. They estimate that roughly half of the water inventory on Mars was flowing during this period.
