They forked the OStatus protocol developed for StatusNet, to add direct messages (as Mastodon did a few years later). As well as to allow for "aspects". A feature that allows people to group their contacts by how they know them (eg family, workmates), or by shared interests (molerats, sportsball), and post only to one or some of those.
This innovation gave people looking for a FarceBook replacement new tools. But it also
created two incompatible social network federations on the web.
