A fair question - my situation is not exactly typical of the average user. Were this a more typical situation, or had I have even once done a backup of my individual account - then yes, it would be trivial to restore.
However, in my case my system and backup drives both sustained damage, and I'm still holding out on recovery.
The reason boosting helps is because this is a brand new instance which doesn't know of any servers. When a toot gets boosted, it typically interacts with (hopefully) many other servers, which MY server then knows about.
On a fresh and young server, search is nearly useless unless you interact with all the other servers you might hope to make contact with.
Relays help enormously with this, however they are few and far between and lacking in coverage. At this point in the game, grass roots are where it's at.
Also, I should mention that I've already reconnected with several of my old favourites because of everyone's boosts directly.
