when i was very young, my mother used to read a book to us called "The Very Last First Time" by jan andrews. it was about a young inuit girl who tunnels into the sea ice during a low tide to forage for mussels along the seabed before the tide returns.
as a kid who grew up alongside a massive lake, it was spellbinding and terrifying to imagine going underneath the ice in winter. the luminescent watercolour illustrations by ian wallace ignited the imagination.
today i found a wonderful article by the NYT about inuit in quebec who still hunt for mussels in the winter. the photos are glorious.
