The logical extension to the American idea that you cannot be tried twice for the same crime is that if you're tried once for a crime that didn't happen, you get a free pass to do that crime once.

I am saying this because the car alarm across the street that has gone off three times now for no reason and I would like believe this grants me some sort of moral justification for my stealing if it happens again.
