Corndalorian has answered it pretty well I think. Core developers cannot force you to run software which ruins bitcoin. Honestly even if there is some critical vulnerability that you need, it is always possible to make a version that includes that and does not include whatever nefarious other code they might want to package with it. That is the nature of open source development
