unpopular opinion: instances that allow more than 500 characters should be defederated. character limits always were the thing that made microblogging interesting and the reading experience of long posts is something completely different that i don’t want when opening mastodon. tbh even 500 characters are too much. i want different apps for different needs. blog posts are great, but that‘s what rss is for.
