It's cognitive dissonance. Real cognitive dissonance, not the meme. When a human faces an existential crisis and they haven't really ever faced one (we can point to certain groups more than others), it's a defense mechanism for the brain to shut it out. It's totally subconscious for most people. Because entertaining the two mutually exclusive truths is legitimately painful to their brain. It's a major hindrance in personal growth and parallels abound.
