I'm not normally in love with this person's analysis but this thread is a useful antidote to the many, many people (myself included) throwing up hands and saying, oh well, there was nothing to be done.
I am not 100% convinced; the anti incumbent sentiment is incredibly strong and Harris never got away from that. But worth reading.
