I think it just suffers from profiteering. A lot of people are trying to work out ways to make money from it. Already we are seeing "Pay to relay" for nostr.
IMO, a large part of what destroyed the internet was the monetization, once methods of money making were worked out and refined they really just took over everything. Who doesn't like to make money right? and of course, providing any kind of service can't be done for 'free'.
It's a tough problem which won't be solved until we work out how to be decentralised without costing extra / more money than it costs to simply have an internet connection.
BBS were a great start and the concept of "information being free for all" was a very strong ideal. Over time though.. money..
So it's not so much web3 being a scam or no good - it's just what the builders choose to build - monetary systems... or free information systems.
