🇬🇧 Jian Wen, a former employee of a Chinese restaurant in the UK, convicted of money laundering, must pay over $3.78 million or risk serving a further 7 years in prison.

Wen, 42, had already been sentenced to 6 years in prison after police seized 61,000 bitcoin.

"Prosecutors told the court the sheer size of the Bitcoin seized, the lack of any legitimate evidence of how it was acquired, all pointed to a criminal origin."

In 2019, police said Wen had bought two properties in Dubai worth more than £500,000.

She claimed to have worked for a Chinese national who asked her to make the purchases and denied that the funds were linked to crime.

Jian Wen came to the attention of the police when she tried to buy some of London's most expensive properties, including a £23.5 million Hampstead mansion and a £12.5 million house next door.

"I think I've been duped. I'm ashamed to say that."

The investigation led to the UK's largest ever cryptocurrency seizure, when more than 61,000 Bitcoin were discovered.

The Bitcoin discovered is believed to have come from a £5 billion investment scam carried out in China between 2014 and 2017.
