Metropolis establishes many of the themes of later scifi films such as the sprawling futuristic industrial punk city, the Eloi-Moloch bifurcation of society and humanoid robots (which interestingly are not envisioned as labor). It seems to advertise the role of unions as a meditator between entrepreneur and worker using Christian themes to bolster its justifications. Funny though that the inventor, rather than being aligned with enterprise, is made out to be the core enemy of society drawing his knowledge from the depths of history like a pagan wizard.
