🇺🇸USA - CONTROVERSY: Donald Trump calls the pro-life heartbeat law a terrible mistake.
In an interview last weekend, Donald Trump said the heartbeat law that protects babies from abortion after six weeks of pregnancy is a "terrible mistake."
"Well, people are starting to think about 15 weeks, that seems to be a number that people are talking about now," Trump said.
"Would you sign that?" Welker pressed.
"I would sit down with both sides and negotiate something, and we would end up with peace on this issue for the first time in 52 years," Trump said. "I'm not going to say whether I would or not."
“I mean, DeSantis would sign a five- and six-week ban,” he added.
"Would you support it?" asked Welker.
"I think what he did is a terrible thing and a terrible mistake," Trump said.
Instead of protecting babies from abortions at 6 weeks, Trump suggested attacking Democrats for late-term abortions.
Trump's comments immediately drew criticism from pro-life advocates.
"Laws protecting the unborn are not a 'terrible mistake,'" Kristen Waggoner, president of the Alliance Defending Freedom, wrote in response to Trump's comment. "They are the mark of a just and moral society. Governors who protect life should be applauded, not attacked."
This is not the first time that Donald Trump has clashed with the pro-life movement in the last 12 months. In 2022 the same happened in relation to the midterm elections.
On the other hand, in Ron DeSantis' campaign, his main campaign financier also wants him to be “less radical” and this includes the anti-abortion agenda. DeSantis has not commented on the issue publicly. Within Florida, the pro-life measures taken remain in effect.
