Gemini wasn't designed to overcome censorship, it's basically really simplified https, but it can of course work over i2p, TOR, yggdrasil and all that shit.
And Gemtext is a very simple markup language, more basic than markdown even.
Their main advantages is that no one cares enough to block all that or even to monitor what people post on there.
E.g. in Russia I wouldn't dare post political stuff on my web log, but Gemini? Who would ever find it? Unless someone from Fedi reports you on purpose and puts enough effort into explaining the coppers how to get on there
Most probably even in this case they won't — there are easier targets for them.
