The industry has always exploited youngsters. Some lean into it, a lot push back. There’s a lot of nasty stuff that goes on for sure.
However, with AI you can fabricate every aspect of an artist to give teenagers something to wank over. That shouldn’t be representative of all musical content.
Personally I’ve taken all work off of Spotify, Tidal etc. and only deal with platforms that pay (Bandcamp, Mirlo, Wavlake). As an artist I’m barely a blip but as a studio engineer my income relies on sales.
Unfortunately common thinking is that artists can make money on touring to make up for paltry amounts from streaming but evidently this is no longer the case.
Big artists can create income from brand tie ins etc. you’re basically an advertising machine in that business model.
I believe you need to be the change you want to see, if this means taking a hit in the short/mid term that’s the price we have to pay.
Truth is, no one values music anymore. It’s £9.99 a month background noise.
