Again, I am reminded of examples of this abuse of religious authority found in Scripture. For example, the priests of Peter’s day warned him and the rest of the apostles to shut their mouths about Jesus and get back in line. And what did Peter and the others tell them?
“Whether it is right in the sight of God to give heed to you rather than to God, you be the judge; 20 for we cannot stop speaking about what we have seen and heard.” (Acts 4:19-20)
My counsel to that young Catholic Facebook friend – and to everyone else held captive by words and warnings by their priests or pastors to keep silent in the face of evil – do as the apostles did: Ignore them.
They are, as St Paul warned, merely children of Satan in clerical garb. (See 2 Corinthians 11:13-15)
My counsel – do not let these guys silence you when you speak truth. You are answerable to Jesus, and to Jesus alone.
