The solution here is to require a "follow request" before anyone can interact with a profile.
That will stop spam because the reply bot would have to be accepted before he can write on anyones profile.
Another solution is when you click on "follow" you would be required to pay 1 Satoshi or less. This would make it too expensive for the reply bot to function.
Currently there is no spam barrier. The only spam barrier is for the relays to manually delete the spam after the spammer has spammed.
The free relays are all trash because anyone can connect to them. The problem is many are using the free relays so you still need to connect to the free relays if you want to see their posts.
I would push one of those 2 ideas above to the developers. I think requiring Satoshi is the best idea. I am following around 100 profiles which is equal to 0.06 USD.
