There was a pretty big security vulnerability that came out a few weeks ago, and required a scramble to get patched up. Hopefully more services will pop up to offer Mastodon instances to people.
When you look for a free server to join, it's just making the same mistake as before. Someone has to pay for it, you'll eventually find out you're the product. It's better than Twitter, but not the ideal solution.
