Caleb James DeLisle on Nostr: I think that Peanut The Squirrel may very well be the thing that costs the Democratic ...
I think that Peanut The Squirrel may very well be the thing that costs the Democratic Party their entire claim on being "the party of human decency".
So many of the democrat influencers are saying "but the law said it was ok to kill the squirrel". This is honestly the most terrible reply possible.
Their whole party identity is based around the idea that they would NOT kill your squirrel, even if it's illegal to have it, because they believe in being decent and reasonable human beings.
The "rules are rules" perspective is a religious-authoritarian vision which is an abbreviated way to say "by all following the rules, we all win, so we need you to follow them too". Democrats are NOT this, their illegal immigration perspective leans decidedly on "human decency".
Their problem though is that illegal immigration could have another explanation, perhaps it's not human decency that motivates them. The right claims that they're importing the 3rd world as a plot to destroy the country, they reply to this with "how could you" and so on.
But their killing of Peanut, or more precisely, their unwillingness to distance themselves from it, calls into question whether they ever actually cared about anyone.
To lose the human decency claim is so devastating. They don't have military strength, they don't have fiscal conservatism, they don't have law and order, and they don't have individual liberty - except in narrow cases like abortion. They gave up anti-war 5 or so years ago, and now even their grip on science and progress is tenuous, with the guy whose Actually Launching Rockets now denouncing them.
Without Human Decency, the democratic party stands for nothing. It's the empty shell of a party that relies on social pressure to bully people into saying they're going to vote for them.
But the whole "nobody has to know who you voted for" thing cuts both ways.
