Many of the things we do to celebrate the festive holidays started out like little treats for the poors: everything is terrible but you can pretend otherwise and put up decorations and feign happy for awhile.
When we buck the trend and put up / leave the decorations when we want, we’re saying we don’t need permission to do these things.
And it feels like some other people have a hard time with that.
Most “tradition” feels a mix of what’s expected of you and what’s acceptable.
