the most frustrating thing about this result is the fact that i'm having to realize that i'm going to need to return to Red State College Town Rules: as a queer person, it is a safe assumption you are on thin ice at best with everyone around you, and unless they
A) directly speak up for you or have your back to a bigot's face while you are around when they have something to lose for it, and
B) they go out of their way to check on you even when they stand to gain nothing from it, including political points
they should not be trusted
that includes--explicitly--the people with important jobs and good families posting pride flags in their social media profiles or with "love is love" signs in their lawns in the neighborhoods you can't afford to live in. that's why it's called Red State College Town Rules; everyone with a mortgage in a red state college town will always value their privilege and their status over your queer hide, no matter how many fucking signs they have in their yard saying otherwise.
over the past 24 hours, i have seen how you have talked about us and blamed us "uneducated rurals" and "culture war footballs" for losing an election you should have had in the bag. i've exclaimed "what are we supposed to do" only to have people tell me to leave the country or hide. i've yet to see anyone give a shit about fighting back with us, much less for us.
and i am back to the flat assumption that none of you are safe.
