The reason I'm not worried about EU abandoning Ukraine in the same way I'm worried about USA is because EU economic and political interests are increasingly embedded in Ukraine. For example here, French arms companies see Ukraine as a major opportunity.
It's not pretty, but it's more solid than 'goodwill'.
