Yep, this is the most prevalent use of the term. However I argue that talking about "trust" does more harm than good, but perhaps it's just my personal crusade 😝

Yes, I agree. However I don't think it's a problem. It works the same way in meatspace. You have to be invited into parties, and the way is to get to know someone that is already in, through random genuine interactions.
