So, you or a person you know has been diagnosed with a mental illness and are considering medical intervention.
Here's my personal insight:
Psychiatry is an incomplete science. Whatever meds you try on the first round are probably not going to be the perfect fit.
To be brutally honest, there's a good chance you will never find the perfect balance, but you will find something that works well enough to get by on.
Communicate with your provider(s)! If bad things happen with a drug (terrible physical side effects or mental instabilities), stop taking it. Call the doctor and try something else. Make a personal note outlining the bad drug and what happened. Seriously, you might change providers, or the doctor will forge they tried that one already... protect yourself.
If you have a support system (spouse, family, friends), communicate with them, too. They are there for you, and will be better able to assist if they know what is going on with you.
