Have you ever seen somebody else suffering and feel sorry for their predicament, that is sympathy, but if you can feel their pain inside and understand what they are going through, that is empathy. It's the same when someone achieves a goal and is happy, if you can be happy for them, or you can feel happy with them. Empathy comes naturally to some people, but most people have to work at it, it takes some insight into human behavior. When you see another person in a situation, ask yourself "what if that were me." I'm not a particularly religious person but I'm touched by the saying: "There but for the grace of God go I."
