"Return to the 36th Chamber" (dir. Lau Kar-leung, 1980) again stars Gordon Liu, but not as the same character from the first film, which is initially confusing. Instead here he's Zhou Renjie, a lowlife laborer with good acting skills who pretends to be San De to threaten the evil boss of a dye workshop into paying his workers proper wages
needless to say he gets beaten up and goes off to train, yadda yadda. the twist here is he's refused entry to the Shaolin Temple and they don't train him, instead he ends up assembling scaffolding around the temple for 3 years before he's thrown out dejected. oh no!
but it turns out he did actually learn kung fu by osmosis by watching the monks train while working, and he uses his "scaffolding kung fu" techniques to kick the bad guys arses anyway
this film is a straight up comedy for the first hour or so, and it turns out Gordon Liu is really good at comedy too!
