The fact that it's been co-opted by the meetup dot com website is what sucks. Brilliant marketing on their part, but now that they suck, I hate that just saying the word reinforces their brand. The problem with the term “user group”, is that it's not universally applicable. e.g. movie user group, book user group. That just sounds awkward. It’s too tech-centric. The word “gathering” is a good replacement.
