I once bicycled the West Coast Bikecentennial route from San Diego to Oregon, then back South to Humboldt County where I lived for ten years. While in Humboldt, I experimented with rigging a bicycle to ride abandoned railroads, and I was never able to come up with a successful rig. This guy has pulled it off, and uses an Ebike to boot. (By the way, if you ever tour the West Coast by bicycle, I HIGHLY recommend traveling North-to-South. By riding South-to-North I fought the prevailing winds the entire way):
