Your professor likely put the fear of God in you not to rush but keep in mind that conducting is a very subjective business. I'd've taken their words with a grain of salt unless it was procedural or technical. I tend to have more of a sharp conducting style because I like to think people will see my hand movements better and they won't have to anticipate when I'm going to move my hands.
