Okay, having briefly used a 27" 4K display with the latest GNOME on the latest Fedora (and I think some non-default experimental stuff enabled), this is... *probably fine*?
I have to do a lot more testing, but it seems like things are pretty crisp compared to a 1x 1440p display at the same size. I think there are still some remaining issues around fractional scaling, but I'm impressed at how much better this is today than it has been in the past.
