When you are asked to estimate always respond with a range. Be as honest as possible about the width of that range. Your boss needs to understand the risks so that the risks can be managed. (What else do you think managers manage?)
Give each estimate using three dates: Earliest(5%)/Nominal(50%)/Latest(95%).
Never offer a single date unless you KNOW you can make it.
