The main cause of lift is that the wings deflect air downwards, raising the plane upwards. The longer upper surface helps with the Bernoulli principle and to minimize vacuum drag, but it is a smaller effect. I could be wrong, but this is my understanding.
I know that was an analogy and not your point.
