Yeah, trying things _is_ nice.
There's just sometimes this background thought, when you try on your own, instead of reading first: "So many people have already tried so many things and surely documented the best ways to deal with xy task at hand .. so if I spent a bit of time reading about these findings, I might very well get nice results without spending lots of time."
But sometimes this reading upfront approach feels too tedious to me, compared to just trying, even if the result might well be mediocre.
