You overestimate how good are the "serious things" made by the "serious people" that power our society. It's all a collection of half-assed solutions (but I do not mean to say we should destroy them, after all anything we can come up with will probably be a half-assed solution too, or worse). Fiat money has the extra feature of being evil and controlled by psychopaths.
