Do you really think it will be complicated to implement it with HSL and that people would get it wrong? Or what else do you have in mind? I think we can assume developers are capable of doing two math operations in order to get the standard implemented correctly, or that libraries will provide that functionality easily. If you assume they will get things wrong then the hex thing can be complex and people can get it wrong too, like you talk about dual colors, but I'm not sure what you mean.

Anyway, I understand that you're against having variants, but I'm not proposing variants. Or do you mean just 2 variants: dark and light? I don't know about that, I think we can go with a single color, but if we want most clients to adopt this we'll have to give them nice colors. More discussion is needed and two competing NIP proposals should be opened.
