WEN makes a small and affordable one that would be good for making pens, but it's still a craft that takes time to perfect.
There are some super unique woods out there that can make really cool pens, but many kits seem to use really cheap feeling parts which is a bummer. I'd like to find a way to make this part out of something not plastic, but with the threads on it, it would be tough:
