Live Skull - “5-D” (1987)
Another underappreciated band. Part of the same New York avant-noise scene that brought us Sonic Youth, who I think overshadowed Live Skull when the band was hitting their peak (1987/88).
They do really cool things with guitars, but share the classic post-punk / No Wave techniques like chiming harmonics, alt-tuning sound textures, crunchy riffs, and ample use of feedback. Their lyrics are often hard to decipher too.
And this sound has really evolved over the span of their career (‘84 - ‘88, back again in 2019). When I was first getting into this band, they had just started with a new lead singer, Thalia Zedek, who has the perfect voice for Live Skull songs. Just watch this video.
This song (from my favorite album, 1987’s “Dusted”) is quite eerie. I think it’s about suicide, but I’ve never found the lyrics written anywhere.
