Yeah the thing is people want to keep all of their repos in one place. GitHub has a big draw because most people already have an account there. Which means it has the biggest user base of devs to interact with in the app without having to communicate using other tools. For personal use you already of course have all of your code on your local machine and only need a get server if you have multiple computers in multiple geographic locations and even then it's not really needed if you have a VPN with all your machines. So most people just have a get up right back up of their code in case something catastrophic happens and to collaborate with other developers since that's where all the accounts of other developers are .
