I have to say, however, that putting your follows in lists - with some not appearing in your main timeline but appearing in a separate pinned timeline - is just as effective as filtering out words.

It doesn't filter the words, but you can stop them appearing most of the time in your main timeline. It kinda makes annoying words less annoying.

I'm mainly talking about references to sport or cross posts from Twitter - things I can live without.

Then you only need to filter words you find triggering.

I had a few filtered words on my last two instances, but I haven't bothered with this instance, but I've found I have only seen the occasional word and it didn't bother me so much.
