I feel like Mastodon was cooler in theory, but this is cooler in practice. In theory Mastodon allowed users to curate the social media experience to their liking but the reality was admins ran the whole thing. Ultimately communities fractured and fractured until they were just silent echo chambers, defeating the purpose of federation in the first place. It just ended up being boring, even if you chose free-speech supporting instances. What's the point of free speech if you're only talking to yourself? Here, users hold the power, not the admins.
