Russia could have been in NATO...
🇷🇺DMITRY MEDVEDEV:

[Do you think the West ever seriously considered that Russia could join NATO?]

"After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia pursued a course towards rapprochement with the West.

At that time, our country's entry into NATO could have been one of the possible scenarios for the development of events.

The idea was to find a way to avoid the division of Europe into opposing military blocs, to overcome the consequences of the Cold War, and to find a common idea as the basis for strengthening collective security.

That chance was missed.

The events in Yugoslavia and the bombings of Belgrade, in violation of all norms of international law, finally dispelled any former illusions.

To be honest, I think that we, as the successor of the USSR, would not have been accepted into the alliance in the 1990s either. Too frightening, too dangerous: after all, a great, albeit weakened, power; a huge but unpredictable country...

But if Russia had fallen apart into seven or eight parts and had also given up nuclear weapons, then we would have been accepted with great pleasure. They would have devoured us piece by piece, smacking their lips with joy.

And that would have been the complete collapse of Russia, which the Anglo-Saxon elites so desired and still desire.

As our president recalled, in 2000, during his meeting with Bill Clinton, the American leader initially even expressed support for the idea of Russia joining NATO. However, after consulting with his team, he took his words back: 'It's not possible right now.'

The rapprochement process never began.

So, special thanks to Clinton for listening to the advisers from the 'deep state'!

In NATO's rejection of us, one can see whatever they wish: a conspiracy of Western elites against Russia, the foresight of our people, or Divine Providence.

And all of these would be true..."
