Bloody hellfire: just had a government health media department (Northern Territory) refuse to respond to my media query because I’m freelance. They said I either have to get an ‘official request’ from the outlet I’m writing for, or put my query through FOI.
Just a reminder/PSA: freelance journalists are responsible for a substantial – and increasing – amount of reporting done in Australia. Without them, there would be a lot of blank spaces/dead air. If we can’t do our jobs, then that’s a problem for all journalists and outlets.
