The iPhone 16 series is being withheld from sale in Indonesia due to lack of Apple investment in the country, according to government officials.
Apple’s most recent investment in the country is coming in the form of another Apple Academy campus, the fourth in the country, to be located in Bali. However, the government said the total value of the realized investment falls Rp230 billion ($14.75 million) short of the Rp1.71 trillion ($109 million) promised by the company, to qualify for iPhone certification renewal which already expired this year. Older phones are exempt and they continue to be sold.
CNBC Indonesia reports that Industrial Minister Agus Kartasasmita said they would like Apple to open an R&D center in the country while Communications and Informatics Minister Budi Arie Setiadi have ruled out Apple’s proposal for a 50 year tax holiday that the Minister claimed was granted by Vietnam in return for a manufacturing plant.
