surprised no one else gave you any else recommendations.
So, I'll be that guy because I had tried many and many Mastodon apps.
Someone else suggested you Elk, but I personally hate it, because it looks very poor comparing, say, to [@phanpy](https://hachyderm.io/@phanpy) .
Phanpy ( stable version at https://phanpy.social and beta version at https://dev.phanpy.social )looks very modern and professional. It's one of these apps that offer such features that Mastodon by itself should but it doesn't.
Would you like to quote posts and even do multi[ple quotes in one post at once? Use Phanpy.
Would you like to posts GIFs from your compose bar at once? Use Phanpy (that feature is currently in beta, so you gonna need to head over to https://dev.phanpy.social and enable this feature in Phanpy's settings)
Would you like to think less about writing alt text for your images that you post? You know the answer (feature is in beta, enable it at https://dev.phanpy.social , in Phanpy's settings) :-)
(To use it, open compose field, upload an image, then click on image and click on 3 dots below and click on "Generate alt text" button and wait. If you'll dislike the alt text it generated for you do the same thing again until you'll like the alt text that it had generated for you).
Do you feel like people boosting too much in your timeline? Phanpy collapses boosts by default in your timelines (it's turnable off in settings if you don't want Phanpy to collapse boosts in your timelines)
Do you receive too much notifications about people liking (favoriting) and boosting your posts? Phanpy collapses them too.
Do you feel like Mastodon is too big, has too many features and you don't use most of them, like you don't need them? Phanpy is a minimal client.
Do you miss Twitter's look and feel? Phanpy is the answer. It even does have the same compose button at the bottom.
Does the "Explore" page on your instance has either no trending posts or really only a few? You can check out other instances's trending posts without leaving Phanpy! Just simply click on your profile avatar at the top, and click on "Trending" button and then click on 3 dots at the top right, and click on "Go to another instance" and enter the domain of the Mastodon server you would like to see trending posts from that instance. Say, I want to see trending posts from mastodon.social . I enter the domain and then I click on each post (if I want to read it fully or see replies), and if I want to interact with the post, then I click on blue button "Switch to my instance to enable interactions".
Do you use Mastodon's Lists feature or have some need to access pages quicker? No problem!
Phanpy offers a "Shortcuts" feature. Like previously you did, click on your profile avatar and click on "Shortcuts/Columns..." button.
There you can choose the mode/the style you want them to appear (if you care about minimalism and quick switching, you can pick "Floating button" style and click on "Add shortcuts" button and after you'll setup the shortcuts you want, you will now have a floating button at the top and there you will need to click on the zipper/lighting bolt icon and you will be switched to the page you set to switch.
What do I hear? You don't want to switch that way? Fine, there an easier way. Choose the mode "Tab/Menu bar" and you will have shortcuts (the pages you need quick access to) displayed to you in Twitter's way.
What do I hear again? You want to forget about Twitter and you would like to see all of your pages that you need to have quick access to at once? Like Tweetdeck?
Okay :-) You can choose "Multi-column" style and click on it and now you will see them all at once.
Of course Phanpy isn't the only Mastodon app to exist. There as well others. To not waste your time, check out https://joinmastodon.org/apps but if you want my suggestions which aren't that great, uh, well, like I said, use Phanpy.
Is English not your native language? Or would you like to know what that Japanese person talks about? Or anyone else who doesn't speaks your native language?
While many Mastodon apps like Elk and [@trunksapp](https://mastodon.social/@trunksapp) do provide the translation button for posts, Phanpy is the only and only Mastodon app that lets you translate people's profile bios. Any profile you will open in Phanpy will be opened in a beautiful popup but if you don't want to, you can always click on person's display name and Phanpy will show you their profile.
Here you can do many things:
- You click on 3 dots at the top right and click on "Switch to account's instance" which will show even these user's activities that aren't displayed on your instance, like user's boosts and user's posts. You can always click on them and click the same blue button "Switch to my instance to enable interactions" and interact with the post the way you like.
Oh shit, I am an idiot 🤦 ! I forgot to mention one more thing that you probably had already noticed: yes Phanpy collapses replies (calling them "comments") so you wouldn't waste your time scrolling through a big wall of replies.
Now back to Phanpy.
- So, on the user's profile you can sort user's posts by replies, boosts, their featured hashtags, and by date.
- Click on user's profile's 3 dots and there you will have even more actions:
- "@Mention [username of the user here]" let's you mention the user the quicker way in a post.
- "Add private note" let's you add and view private comments that you left on profiles that only you can see and no one else can.
- "Enable notifications" you will receive a notification about every new post that user will post.
- "Disable boosts" - you will no longer see what had that person shared.
- "Add/Remove from Lists" lets you add/remove person to and from your lists.
- "Copy handle" - lets you copy user's username and domain.
- Then there's next a direct link to user's original profile (on user's posts you can do the same for the posts).
- Next is a link that allows you to copy that user's profile link (same for user's posts).
- Next 3 buttons allows you to mute user for specific amount of time (up to you to choose) or forever, block user forever, and report user if you need to.
Oof! And that's not even all Phanpy's features I even mentioned!
Like I personally love the way Phanpy displays threads of posts, love that it has supports for accounts that are groups/forums, and etc.
Oof, you better try it out:
